Brian Dagostino C’20 is currently working for Major League Baseball while studying at Georgetown
April 2022 – The COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench into the post-graduation plans for Drew University alum Brian Dagostino C’20.
Instead of pursuing a job, he pursued a masters degree in sports business and management at Georgetown University, which he’ll complete next month. But while he had one eye on the classroom, he kept the other focused on his career.
In June 2021, Dagostino began an internship with the Major League Baseball Office of the Commissioner where he’s been working primarily in on-field baseball communications.
“Just a few weeks ago I was in the office listening as the votes were coming in to see if the players would pass the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Just a really cool moment, and Drew helped create the path to get there,” he said.
Dagostino, a media and communications major and history minor, got the position in part due to his experience interning with the New York Yankees’ media relations department throughout his time at Drew.
He landed a postseason internship with the Yankees as a sophomore thanks to the help of Drew’s former athletics director, Jason Fein, now in the same role at Bates College. With a foot in the door, Dagostino continued to impress and was offered to work with the Yankees during their subsequent playoff runs in his junior and senior years at Drew.
While with the Yankees, Dagostino networked and gained contacts to build a strong relationship with both the Yankees and the MLB Commissioner’s Office, which, along with some sage advice from Drew’s athletics staff, led to his current role.
“My former baseball coach [and associate athletic director for advancement and operations/compliance] Brian Hirschberg—who I consider family—has continued to advise me as I’ve navigated some key decisions after graduating in terms of pursuing a masters versus job opportunities. Christa Racine, [director of athletics and head women’s soccer coach], was also super supportive and offered insight from her own experiences and helped me weigh my options based on what I was looking to ultimately achieve.”
Thanks in no small part to a strong support system at Drew, Dagostino has been able to weather the impact the pandemic has had on the job market, and start a dream career.
