Drew University Class of 2023 Outcomes: Cameron Orefice

Cameron Orefice C’23 is entering University of Maryland’s English PhD program

May 2023 – The members of the Drew University College of Liberal Arts Class of 2023 are set to graduate and start their careers and continue their education in an array of disciplines, fields, and subjects.

We’ve talked with many C’23 students to see where they’re headed.

Cameron Orefice C’23 | University of Maryland’s English PhD program with a concentration in language, writing, and rhetoric

Majors: English, Italian

Certificate: Teaching Writing

How did Drew prepare you for your next steps?

Drew’s small class sizes allowed me to develop close relationships with my professors who taught me a lot about the field of writing studies. They are the ones who encouraged me to apply in the first place. They also wrote personalized recommendations for me because the classes allowed them to get to know me. The professors here clearly care a lot about the students. I think I’ll miss them most of all once I leave Drew.

How did Drew help your PhD application stand out?

I think my application stood out because of the recommendations that I mentioned, but also because of my multi-semester experience as a writing fellow, an embedded learning fellow, and a writing specialist at the University Writing Center. These opportunities to assist students with writing are something that not every school has, and Maryland was excited that I already had some in-classroom experience with teaching writing.
