Technology, Religion, and Race: Progress and Its Racial Histories

Join Hyemin Na, assistant professor of religion, media, and culture, for a discussion on how narratives regarding technological advancement, religion, and racial identity have been intertwined from the start. Professor Na will present the ways in which science and technology function as markers of advancement in narratives of civilization, exploring how progress itself is racialized through visual depictions. Emily Hill, associate professor of computer science, and Minjoon Kouh, associate professor of physics and neuroscience, will respond from their disciplinary perspectives, infusing the discussion with examples of how current technologies repeat or disrupt racialized “sins” of the past.
