Frequently Asked Questions.
Call Health Services at 973-408-3414 to schedule an appointment. If you are not sure that you need a visit, ask to speak to a nurse who can help you decide. Most common illnesses and minor injuries can be treated on campus. If you are seriously ill, you might be referred to the hospital or an off-campus specialist.
Students are encouraged to correspond directly with faculty as soon as possible regarding any illnesses that may result in absenteeism from class. Health Services does not give permission for students to miss class for routine, short-term illnesses. For significant, prolonged illnesses the Health Service may provide verification that the student was seen here. The student must sign an Authorization to Disclose Health Information form available at the Health Service prior to Health Service staff discussing any student illnesses with faculty. Once a release is signed, the student should inform faculty that they can call the Health Service to discuss the situation.
For any emergency, call 911 for immediate assistance. For a list of local urgent care centers for medical care when the Health Service is closed, visit our Emergency Information page under After-Hours Medical Care.
If you did not complete all of your admissions health requirements, there will be a health hold on your account until requirements are met. First, check your email. You may have received an email from the Health Service explaining what you are missing. You can also check the homepage of your health portal. If you did not receive an email, or still have questions after reading it, contact our office by phone: 973-408-3414 or email: health@drew.edu and we will assist you. Visit our New Students: Submitting Your Health Forms page for full instructions and requirements.

Encourage your student to call the Health Service at 408-3414 for assistance. The receptionist will give your student an appointment to be evaluated by a Nurse Practitioner or Physician. Same day or next day appointments are usually possible and urgent care is available immediately. If students are not sure that they need a visit, they can ask to speak to a nurse who will help them decide. It is very important that students return for follow-up evaluations when requested to do so.
Yes. If your student is very ill, or in need of further evaluation, we may refer him/her to the emergency room or to an off-campus specialist. If the emergency room is needed, either Campus Security or Health Service may request an ambulance transport to Morristown Medical Center. If students become very ill when the Health Service is closed, they should call 911 for immediate assistance. Morristown Medical Center is a Regional Trauma Center located 3 miles from Drew.
If students are over 18 years of age, it means that we cannot tell you about their health care unless we have written permission from them. At times, this distresses parents and families, but that is the law, and we must abide by it. If your student tells you about an illness, please encourage your student to sign a release if you want more information. We will be happy to discuss the situation with you when we have written permission to do so. If your student refuses to do so, there is nothing we can do unless they are in a life-threatening condition. In this situation, we will notify the VP/Dean of Campus Life and Student Affairs or the hospital, who will contact you. Please make sure that your emergency contact numbers are current.
The Health Service provides comprehensive primary health care on campus, including health education. Our professional staff can answer questions, examine or test on site, counsel on general health and wellness concerns, or refer to an outside specialist if needed. If you think that there is something serious going on, or you have important information to share, you can certainly call us, and we will contact your student and try to follow up. We always tell a student when a parent or family member has called because we think it is important to do so.
Sometimes we make a referral to the Counseling Service on campus when a student is psychologically stressed, or students can contact the Counseling Service directly by calling 973-408-3398. The Counseling Center provides free short-term counseling on campus.
We strongly recommend that you purchase the basic student insurance if you are enrolled in an out of area HMO (even in NJ) or if you have a large deductible on your private insurance. Student insurance covers most billable services on campus ( i.e. prescription medications and lab work that is obtained at the Health Service), and will apply to charges related to x-rays or specialist care off-campus. Having this insurance gives us more options for local referrals and gives you peace of mind. Students do not have to enroll in the student insurance to use the Health Service. We do not charge for routine office visits, and we never refuse care because of inability to pay for labs or medications at the time of service.
Yes. The Health Service holds several flu clinics during the fall semester, and flu shots are also available by appointment as supplies last.
Yes. Students are responsible for managing their own medication.
Yes. While we perform routine tests on site in our state licensed lab (such as rapid strep and mono tests), we send bloodwork and other specimens as needed out to Lab Corp. For student convenience, we will also draw blood for tests ordered by outside providers. Students who are not enrolled in the student plan should check with their insurance company to see if LabCorp is an approved lab on their family plan.
No, we do not perform third-party billing for charges that are incurred at the Health Service. However, we will give students a receipt/statement that they can submit to your insurance company when a service is received on campus. Processing family insurance, including pre-authorizations for laboratory tests, x-rays, specialist referrals, hospitalization and related charges for both on and off campus care are the student’s responsibility.
We usually do not recommend this for undergraduates. It is probably wise to keep your health care the same when students are home. Remember, most care can be received on campus which is especially convenient. Students enrolled in the student insurance plan will also have options for local care and x-rays without using family insurance.
In our continuing commitment to provide high quality, cost-effective care, we welcome your comments and concerns. We encourage you to discuss policies and procedures with the Health service staff directly at 973/408-3414 or stop by when you are on campus.
