Statement on UVA, University of Idaho tragedies, 11/15/22

Dear Drew community,

Yesterday, the country learned of tragic events at the University of Virginia and the University of Idaho. While details of these acts of violence continue to emerge, our hearts are heavy as we think of sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, friends, teammates, and students lost; futures suddenly erased; and campuses in mourning.

Whether at a place of learning, worship, or recreation, these spaces of community with assumed innocence and peace have all too often become scenes of tragedy, violence, and sadness.

At Drew, we began another week of learning and living in earnest. For many, the feeling of routine comfort and safety were shockingly rattled as we heard news of the tragedies in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Moscow, Idaho. Even though they may be hundreds of miles away, the senselessness of the violence resonated across our campus community.

While we send our love and support to all those who are mourning the loss of a loved one, students who need resources on campus may contact the counseling center at counseling@drew.edu, while faculty and staff can reach out to our employee assistance program at www.unum.com/lifebalance. Members of the Drew community may also contact the Chaplain’s office for support at chaplain@drew.edu.

Sincerely,
