Drew University Keeps Student Activities Programming Running

Virtual events bring The Forest to students

March 2020 – Just because The Forest isn’t as crowded with students doesn’t mean Drew University’s Student Engagement office has slowed down in making Drew feel like a community.

“We want to keep our students engaged, and remind them that we’re here for them,” said Megan McHugh, director of student activities.

Twice-weekly trivia days feature different themes each event.

“It’s been unbelievable to see the staff come together to provide virtual programming opportunities for students. It’s not just Student Engagement—Counseling, Wellness and the Center for Internships and Career Development have all joined forces to make this happen for our students.”

For Student Engagement, it’s more important than ever to continue programing, stay connected with students and keep the Drew community a true community.

“We hope that our virtual events provide students with whatever it is they need in that moment—a break from their coursework, something to fill their down time, an opportunity to move their body, a chance to learn something new or a platform to connect with other Drew students,” said McHugh.

The events have been well-received and well-attended, with nearly 100 participants showing up for the Tuesday and Thursday biweekly trivia events.

Among recent and future programming are virtual fitness classes, a Women’s History Month video series and a month-long virtual game tournament series in April. Yoga and meditation classes will continue through April every Friday afternoon at 2 with Cynthia Bearison, Drew’s fitness instructor, and more diversity-themed events are in the works.

Drew has also invited students, parents and alums to twice-weekly Ask the Experts virtual presentations where faculty members discuss important topics as they relate to the coronavirus, including virology, economics and finance, comparative governmental responses and public policy, among others.
