My mother was adamant about instilling in me and my sisters the importance of being a considerate and caring human being. One of the guiding principles of a considerate and caring human being is to “think before you speak” or, rather, choose your words wisely.

Over the years and through my experiences as a movement and somatics practitioner, dance educator, arts administrator, social justice and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) facilitator, and professor I have encountered my share of communication challenges. In each of these spaces, I can say that my mother’s wisdom shaped my passion for developing effective communication skills that have enabled me to connect with others in an authentic way.
