UPS Asks ‘What Can Brown Do For Drew?’

Delivery company recruits Drew computer science, data analytics students

December 2019 – Recruiters from UPS popped into Drew University classes to present internship and career opportunities within the multinational company.

The recruiters targeted both undergraduate and graduate students, visiting classes like Computer Science 340, Software Engineering and Data Analytics 353/602, Analysis for Data Science, a part of the new Data Analytics master of science program, to discuss the tech-focused roles.

The presentation mirrored a visit from Nielsen in October, both aimed at fulfilling the core tenets of the Launch learning experience.

“With Launch, we are deliberately surrounding students with access to mentors, transferable skills development and immersive experiences that can help them apply what they have learned in the classroom and prepare them for the next step in their career or life pathway,” said Greg Townsend C’05, Drew’s Director of Career Center and Government Relations.

“What better way to do this than to bring a brand name company like UPS to the classroom to talk about their company, the skills they are looking for in interns and graduates and recruit Drew students?”

The 10-week summer internships and school year co-op opportunities in fields including mobile, drone and geospatial technologies, and artificial intelligence provide students with hands-on experiences and extremely high full-time placement rates. Past interns have developed and implemented the company’s customer service chat bot and helped UPS become the first FAA-approved drone delivery air carriers.

“It is opportunities like this that will help students better understand how what they are learning every single day here at Drew will lead to success after Drew,” said Townsend.
