Global Partner Programs

To offer the widest possible array of choices for global education, Drew maintains affiliations with Global Partners – educational programs providers selected by Drew based on their high academic and administrative quality – to provide opportunities for study around the world. These Global Partner Programs have been approved by the faculty.

How to Apply

The Center for Global Education assists all students to find a program that meets their academic and personal goals.

Students who are interested in studying abroad for a semester through one of our global partners must follow the steps below:

  1. Schedule an Advising Session with the Center for Global Education to discuss your goals and the longTREC process
  2. Research programs of interest using our global partner program links below and narrow your list down
  3. Meet with your Academic Advisor to discuss your study abroad goals and how they fit into your academic plan prior to submitting a longTREC | Global Partner Program Application
  4. Meet with your Financial Aid Counselor to discuss your financial aid package
  5. Research and apply to outside scholarships, visit our TREC Finances page for a list of scholarships, please note this is not an exhaustive list
  6. Submit a longTREC | Global Partner Program Application
  7. Apply to global partner programs early and inquire about scholarships
    • CGE staff will evaluate longTREC applications shortly after the deadline and will provide Home School Authorization once a student’s Global Partner Program longTREC application has been approved
    • If a program’s application deadline falls before the Drew longTREC deadline, CGE staff can consider a longTREC application once it is completed and provide a provisional Home School Authorization
  8. Complete the Registrar’s longTREC Course Pre-Approval Form
  9. Apply for visas as needed
  10. Notify Drew Housing that you will not require on-campus housing for the semester you are abroad upon Drew’s approval of your longTREC application

  • Meet with your health and/or mental health professional as needed to prepare for study abroad
  • If you are taking any medications, confirm they are legal in the countries you are considering
    • Make sure to work with your doctor/health insurance to obtain enough medication for your time abroad

Note: Students enrolled in an international shortTREC, the London Semester longTREC, or approved Global Partner longTRECs are automatically covered under Drew’s International Travel insurance policy with Educational & Institutional Insurance Administrators, Inc. (EIIA). It is critical that students maintain appropriate health insurance while traveling overseas.
Petition Process

Petition Overview
Drew University students who wish to enroll in a study abroad program that is not currently affiliated with or approved by Drew, and therefore not recognized for academic credit, must petition the Center for Global Education through a longTREC | Non-Partner Program Petition Application.

Please note that the longTREC Non-Partner Program Petition is intended only for students who have specific academic needs that cannot be met on any of Drew’s current approved programs; petitions for programs that are largely duplicate to, or are in enrollment competition with, existing Drew University programs or recognized affiliated programs in the same city or country are not normally approved.

Before beginning an application, students should carefully research program options and begin discussion with the Center for Global Education one year in advance of the anticipated program.  Students can review approved programs on the Global Partner Program webpage and arrange to meet with a Center for Global Education advisor to discuss.

Before preparing a petition, students are required to consult with the Center for Global Education and their Academic Advisor to discuss their specific interest in the program and how it will fit into their academic plans. Students are strongly encouraged to select a “backup plan” program in the event the petition is not approved.

A committee of faculty and staff reviews completed petitions on a rolling basis and makes a recommendation to the Center for Global Education to either approve or reject the petition. Petitions are judged on the merit of the student’s academic objectives in relation to specific study abroad opportunities for which they are seeking approval, and petitioners are expected to have superior grades and sound academic preparation for their chosen program. It is important to note that:

  • A limited number of petitions will be approved each semester.
  • Petition requests for the same non-approved program by multiple students will not increase the likelihood of approval.
  • Student petitions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Previous approval granted to another student for the same program in no way signifies that a similar petition will be approved.
  • Students may only submit one petition per semester.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Program Requirements

  • Program must be accredited by a body duly recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or be officially recognized by the appropriate government agency/ministry of education for foreign institutions.
  • Program must be academically rigorous and provide a high degree of cultural integration and linguistic immersion (when applicable)
  • 24/7 emergency support and comprehensive international travel and health insurance must be available
  • On-Site Program Director or support staff must be available throughout the duration of the program
  • Housing must be vetted and managed by program provider; independent housing is not allowed except by petition
  • Program location must be located in a country with a U.S. State Department Travel Advisory Level of “1” or “2”
  • Program must follow financial policies that align with university practices

Guidelines / Costs

  • Should your Non-Partner Program longTREC Petition be approved, you will be held to our Global Partner Program longTREC policies.
  • When participating in a longTREC, students will pay Drew tuition to Drew. All students who choose to participate in a Global Partner or Approved Non-Partner Program longTREC will also pay Drew a Study Abroad Fee, which will be calculated upon review of your application. Students will pay all non-tuition charges (e.g. room and/or board, health insurance, excursion costs, etc.) directly to the program provider.
  • Students will continue to be eligible for financial aid while studying on a longTREC, whether the Drew London Semester, a Global Partner Program longTREC, or an Approved Non-Partner Program longTREC. This includes federal and state loans and Drew merit scholarships and need-based grants. It does not include work study. In general, eligibility for financial aid is based on Drew tuition, cost of housing and meals for the program in which a student is participating and an allowance for books, travel and personal expenses.
  • Note that students may only use Merit Scholarships or Drew need-based grants for one semester on any longTREC program (London Semester, Global Partner Program longTREC, or Approved Non-Partner Program longTREC).
