Drew University Faculty, Alums Receive Nonfiction Book Award

Biannual Kornitzer Prize given to two faculty, two alums

August 2020 – Drew University professors Traci C. West and Chris Andrews have been announced as the faculty winners of the 2019 Kornitzer Prize for Nonfiction. Betty Livingston Adams T’05 and Daniel Moran G’14 are the two alumni winners of the prize.

The award, established in 1992, recognizes Drew faculty and alums for their nonfiction work.

Adams is one of two alums to receive the 2019 award.

For the 2019 awards, books published between 2015 and 2019 were accepted for consideration and reviewed by a committee comprised of two past winners, Jonathan Rose, Drew’s William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of History, and Associate Professor Ed Baring, as well as Drew Theological School Librarian Dr. Jesse Mann and Drew University Librarian Andrew Bonamici.

West, the James W. Pearsall Professor of Christian Ethics and African American Studies in the Drew Theological School, won for her book Solidarity and Defiant Spirituality: Africana Lessons on Religion, Racism, and Ending Gender Violence.

Andrews, assistant professor of sociology, won for his book The Overworked Consumer: Self-Checkouts, Supermarkets, and the Do-It-Yourself Economy.

Adams won for her book Black Christian Women’s Activism: Seeking Social Justice in a Northern Suburbwhich she discussed with Drew’s website when it was first published in 2016.

Moran, who teaches at Rutgers University and Monmouth University, won for his book Creating Flannery O’Connor: Her Critics, Her Publishers, Her Readers.

The award winners each receive $2,000 as a prize.

The Bela Kornitzer Award was established by Alicia Karpati and her late husband, George Karpati, in honor of Bela Kornitzer, Mrs. Karpati’s brother. The Award recognizes the achievements in Hungary and in the United States of Hungarian-born journalist and author Bela Kornitzer (1910-1964). Mr. Kornitzer’s archives are housed in the Drew University Library.
