Alum edits social media videos for high-profile personalities
April 2022 – Joie Affleck C’20 has taken the skills she learned in and out of the Drew University classroom and applied them in her role as production coordinator at FanDuel.
In her role with the country’s largest online sportsbook, Affleck, a media and communications major and Spanish and studio art double minor, edits videos for social media content on Twitter, Tik Tok, Instagram, and more.
Just a year into her role, she has already edited content for high-profile brand ambassadors like Pat McAfee, Dikembe Mutombo, Bill Burr, and Dr. Disrespect.
“It’s the most ideal work environment I could ask for,” said Affleck. “I work from my apartment in Jersey City with my cat Kimchi.”
Looking back at her time at Drew, Affleck points to one particularly impactful mentor and one influential class as preparing her for her role.
“My time working for Shawn Spaventa, director of instructional technology, truly prepared me to work at FanDuel. He went out of his way to provide learning resources to further my editing knowledge, educate me about camera setups, and emphasized the communication needed to succeed in the field,” she said.
“He had me film lectures or events to build on-location skills. Furthermore, he provided a safe space for me to express my anxieties about life or school, which made all the difference in my educational career. I like to call him my Drew Dad.”
As for her classroom experience, Documentary Practice, a requirement for the media and communications major, provided Affleck with a key jolt.
“I wasn’t expecting to be reinvigorated with a forgotten passion,” she said. “I had created a documentary about Prohibition using iMovie when I was 13 and won a state award. By taking Documentary Pracyice, I feel back in love with the process of video editing and found a career path!”
