Where They’re Going: Jessica Luis C’22

“Over the course of my time at Drew, friends and the affiliations I have participated in have encouraged me to continue on a path of teaching and helping the community.”

May 2022 – We’re taking a look at where some of the Drew University College of Liberal Arts Class of 2022 is heading.

Jessica Luis C’22

Computer science major, statistics minor

Senior resident assistant; Resident Hall Association national communications coordinator; student program coordinator, University Programming Board event coordinator; Academic Association committee member

Where she’s going

Luis will teach fifth and sixth grade mathematics at Success Academy Charter School in East Harlem, NY. She will also attend Touro College to earn her master’s degree in childhood and special education, grades one-six.

Finding support

“Over the course of my time at Drew, friends and the affiliations I have participated in have encouraged me to continue on a path of teaching and helping the community. I have enjoyed building peace and providing resources for the community to thrive off of as well as educating my peers to continue building up.”

Identifying her path

“I found my path to teaching and working in the community by attending career conferences in New York. There I would go table to table, meeting and greeting different companies and organizations that are hiring for fall of 2022. I was originally looking for a job in GIS or data analytics, but I am someone who likes to venture out of my comfort zone and try everything. I had talked with another school and while researching I found Success Academy. That started my interest in teaching and it began to grow into a career.”
