Zoe Bowser C’23 | Harvard Graduate School of Education

Majors: Art, Art History

Minor: Spanish

What will you be pursuing at Harvard?

Through the Harvard Graduate School of Education program, I will receive my masters in education, as well as my secondary teaching license in mathematics. During this time I will also be working as a half-time teacher of record at a local school in Massachusetts.

What role did mentors play in defining your path?

My professors were absolutely pivotal to my success at Drew and beyond. Rita Keane [professor of art history] and Margaret Kuntz [professor of art history] continually facilitated my success, and supported my academic and professional goals. As I completed my art history major with specialized honors, they encouraged me to consider the ways in which art history overlapped with my other areas of interest: education and mathematics. I wrote an honors thesis, advised by Professor Keane, which proposed the integration of art history into high school mathematics. By designing this curriculum reform, I was able to conduct research which ultimately helped me to pursue graduate studies in mathematics education.

How did you come to decide on teaching?

In addition to my studies at Drew, I was also able to complete internships which facilitated my post-graduate plans. For two summers I worked as a teaching fellow with Breakthrough Summerbridge in San Francisco, during which time I taught eighth grade algebra and ninth grade geometry. This experience introduced me to mathematics education, and allowed me to begin exploring the relationship between my own experiences in mathematics and the arts. This position truly solidified my love of teaching, and provided me invaluable first-hand experience in the classroom.
