Drew University Mourns the Passing of Longtime Professor Tom Christofferson

Christofferson taught at Drew from 1973 to 2002

February 2024 – Drew University mourns the passing of Tom Christofferson, who taught in the College of Liberal Arts and Caspersen School of Graduate Studies for 40 years.

Christofferson passed away in January at the age of 84.

A graduate of the University of North Dakota (bachelors in history) and Tulane University (PhD), Christofferson held several teaching positions across the South before arriving at Drew in 1973.

Christofferson taught medieval and modern European history throughout his 40 years at Drew, and added courses in modern Latin American history to his offerings. He also played a leading role in the school’s London and Brussels study abroad programs and helped create a graduate-level program in modern European intellectual history.

He retired in 2002 as the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of History having impacted thousands of students and having written scholarly articles and books on the Revolution of 1848 in France, French socialism, and France in World War II.
