A student-organized mission towards sustainability and environmentalism
April 2024 – Drew University celebrated Earth Week with a week-long array of events organized by the student-run organization Drew Environmental Action League (DEAL).
DEAL collaborated with other student-led groups and University partners to provide a variety of events to the community, including a sewing clothing repair event with Fiber Arts at Drew, invasive plant species removal with the Outdoor Club, Baby FernFest with Connect with Kids and children from the Acorn Academy, outdoor yoga with intramural sports, and a pot painting and planting session together with Drew Counseling.
Associate Teaching Professor of Environmental Studies Lisa Jordan led an environmental justice conversation while students from the Fashion Action Scholars put their first-year project in action with a sustainability-centered fashion show in Drew’s Black Box Theatre.
“DEAL was eager to collaborate with 11 clubs, campus organizations, and outside community partners during Earth Week 2024,” said Anna Beth Lee C’24, president of DEAL. “We are confident that we could not have created or supported ten events in one week for students and faculty on campus without the help of these intersectional collaborators. DEAL is working hard to break down silos on campus and demonstrate that environmentalism and the climate crisis weave through an infinite web of issues and areas of study.”
The festivities concluded with the annual FernFest celebration where students, faculty, and staff gather to replenish native ferns and wildflowers on campus.
