Drew University Professor Publishes Book on Right-Wing Religious Politics

Chelsea Ebin’s The Radical Mind: The Origins of Right-Wing Catholic and Protestant Coalition Building has been widely quoted

October 2024 – Drew University Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations Chelsea Ebin recently had her book on the right-wing religious political movement published.

In The Radical Mind: The Origins of Right-Wing Catholic and Protestant Coalition Building, Ebin explores how the historic coalitions of Catholics and Protestants inform the radical Christian right in today’s U.S. politics.

“The book is particularly timely given that J.D. Vance, the current Republican candidate for Vice President, has expressed many ideas that reflect the socially and politically conservative positions first articulated by the Catholic New Right, and also given the historic relationship between one of the political activists I researched, Paul Weyrich, and the Heritage Foundation and Project 2025,” explained Ebin.

The book has been cited in a recent Rolling Stone magazine article on Vance, and Ebin has written about the subject in numerous articles and blog posts, and did a two-part interview on the Straight White American Jesus podcast.

Ebin, who teaches classes on American politics, political theory, gender, and the law, brings her research into the classroom to help facilitate and support conversation on current events.

“My research for the book informs classroom discussions on contemporary issues within American politics, particularly those pertaining to gender, LGBTQ+ politics, and religious freedom,” said Ebin.
