“Drew University’s Master of Science in Finance program allows students from around the world to realize their dreams in investments,” said Associate Teaching Professor of Finance and Associate Chair Department of Business Steve Firestone. “David is a perfect example of what happens when intelligence, work ethic, and a relentlessly positive professional attitude meet the moment.”

“David securing this position is a testament to both his global perspective and HighVista’s recognition of his talent,” echoed Assistant Professor of Finance Hamed Yousefi. “David’s success highlights the strength of Drew’s MFin program in preparing international students for globally competitive careers. Through targeted coursework, faculty mentorship, and industry exposure, Drew’s program equips students with the tools and confidence to pursue roles with top-tier U.S.-based financial institutions, whether in the U.S. or abroad.”

Today, Osae serves as a Financial Research Consultant at HighVista Strategies, an investment firm based in Boston, where he manages a central research database used by the firm’s investment team from his home country of South Africa. We sat down with Osae to learn how Drew’s Master of Science in Finance program prepared him for the role, why he came to Drew, and his advice for international students looking to follow in his footsteps.

How did you find your position with HighVista Strategies?
At the time, I was back in South Africa working as the Chief Financial Officer of a defense start-up. While the role was both fulfilling and dynamic, I found myself eager to return to the finance and investment industry, which aligns more closely with my academic background. I came across an international recruitment company based in the U.S. and decided to create a profile out of curiosity. About a month later, I was contacted about an opportunity at HighVista Strategies—and that led to my current role.

What are your responsibilities there?
HighVista recently transitioned the platform it uses to manage its research on current, historical, and prospective investment opportunities. As a Financial Research Consultant, my primary responsibilities are to organize, maintain, and streamline the central research database to ensure it is both comprehensive and accessible for the investment team.

How has Drew prepared you for this opportunity?
Drew provided me with a strong foundation in finance, both theoretically and practically. The exposure to the U.S. financial markets, combined with access to world-class faculty, helped me develop the industry knowledge and soft skills necessary to thrive. Beyond coursework, the mentorship and career guidance I received at Drew played a pivotal role in helping me navigate the professional world.

Why did you decide to enroll in Drew’s Master of Science in Finance program?
A former high school classmate who attended Drew and later secured a role at Goldman Sachs inspired me to explore studying abroad. Drew quickly stood out for its beautiful campus, small class sizes, and its highly regarded finance and business faculty. It felt like the ideal place to grow both academically and personally—and a place where I could truly unlock my full potential.

Do you have any advice for students, especially international students, who are considering Drew University?
I encourage international students to build strong relationships with their peers, especially fellow international students who can relate to the experience of studying far from home. I also recommend taking full advantage of the accessibility and knowledge of Drew’s faculty. Their support, insights, and willingness to engage were invaluable to me in shaping my academic and professional path.
