Part of Pioneer Works’ free Second Sundays program in Brooklyn
August 2026 – Two Drew University professors are teaming up to run an art and climate workshop in Brooklyn on August 9.
Professor of Art and Director of Creative Art & Technology Lee Arnold and Assistant Professor of Art Ryan Woodring will lead the workshop at Pioneer Works as part of their free Second Sundays programming.
The workshop, open to all ages, will feature participants painting on melting ice cubes, which will puddle onto watercolor paper below to create their piece. Individuals will leave with their own one-of-a-kind painting having contributed to a growing archive of artistic climate research.
“Providing an unstable surface for fixed representation, the exercise enacts an embodied response to the climate crisis through a material entanglement with chance, loss, and change,” explained Woodring.
Participants will be able to paint at their own pace, channeling their climate anxieties through pigment, all while having the opportunity to speak with and learn from Columbia University climate scientist Marco Tedesco.
The workshop is based on a similar exercise in Woodring’s classes at Drew and incorporates ideas about art engaging with community that both Arnold and Woodring bring to the Drew classroom.
