A Gift of Remembrance

Dorothea Beane C’74 did not enter Drew as an Educational Opportunity Scholar, but when it came time to remember her alma mater in her will, she honored the university’s commitment to a diverse student body with a $150,000 gift.

“I feel I was a beneficiary of that commitment,” Beane says. “I still have lifelong friends that I met there. In order to support diversity, it is important to contribute to it in any way you can.”

After graduating, Beane went on to a distinguished career as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice and an assistant United States attorney. Later she became the first African-American professor to be granted tenure at the Stetson University College of Law.

In 2012 Drew honored Beane with its Frances B. Sellers Award, an alumni achievement award named for the first administrator of Drew’s Educational Opportunity Scholars program, which provides grants and academic services for first-generation college students from low-income families.

“I could not have made a better choice of undergraduate school,” Beane says. “It was a well-maintained campus, and the quality of instruction was outstanding. In order to continue that, it takes money.”

Your legacy. Drew’s future.
