January 2018 – Drew University’s new Master of Science in Finance is a rigorous one-year immersion in the quantitative and analytical methods and tools used throughout the financial sector.
Students apply their knowledge and skills through real-world internships and co-curricular programming such as guest lectures and visits to top New York City financial firms, banks, regulators and nonprofits that promote financial ethics and literacy.
The MS in Finance is defined by five key traits:
1. Intensity. The course of study is narrow and deep in keeping with market demand for more focused graduate programs in specialized fields.
2. Hands-On Experience. Internships are a key component of the degree and one that sets it apart from others. All students work in the financial services industry in the summer following two semesters of coursework. The summer also includes a capstone project. In addition, Drew is developing a student lab that will feature Bloomberg terminals. “It’s a fantastic tool to get students up to speed on anything related to finance,” said Marc Tomljanovich, director of MFin. “One of the things we really want to impart to our students is an understanding of what kind of data is used by analysts.”
3. Interdisciplinarity. Topics such as ethics in the financial services industry and behavioral biases are probed alongside analytics, derivatives and risk management.
4. Connectedness. The program builds on Drew’s link to the world’s preeminent financial hub—New York City—forged over two decades through the school’s successful Wall Street program and bolstered by a well-placed network of graduates. Speakers and mentors from the financial services—including alumni—will work with students both inside and outside the classroom.
5. Affordability. At $1,200 per credit, the cost of the 30-credit degree is less than other nearby programs. Also, the one-year time commitment represents a savings compared to graduate business degrees that take years to complete.
The new degree is built on Drew’s two decades of success with its unique Wall Street Semester and strong ties to the financial services industry.
