Sauerman will gain skills, pursue goals as a Rachel Carson Council Fellow
September 2022 – Over the summer, Drew University student Elisabeth Sauerman C’24 was named a Rachel Carson Council (RCC) Fellow for the 2022-23 academic year.
Sauerman will complete an environmental-based project while soaking in lessons and gaining skills through the RCC’s resources and learning opportunities, like their American Environmental Leadership Institute.

“It is very much about investing in an individual’s skills as an environmental advocate and activist,” said Sauerman, a public health and environmental studies & sustainability double major and anthropology and environmental justice double minor.
In addition to completing her project, Sauerman has two other goals—sharpen her advocacy skills and use the tools she builds from the fellowship to establish a sustainability council at Drew, where has received a great deal of support.
“Every person and experience I have had at Drew has been formative and guiding in pursuing my interests and fellowship,” she said.
After Drew, Sauerman plans on pursuing a masters in public health, a degree Drew recently added to its growing list of Dual-Degrees through a partnership with the Boston University School of Public Health.
“I want to work towards being able to work within communities to tackle environmental health problems relating to systemic inequality. This fellowship, in addition to my courses at Drew, will give me a better understanding of the execution of a strategic plan in advocacy work in order to increase the longevity of any given project I work on.”
