Drew University Music at Noon Events Give Spotlight to Students

Next concert is Friday, April 5

April 2024 – Several times per semester, Drew University’s Music Department puts on Music at Noon concerts to put students both serious and casual about music in the spotlight.

While it is common for undergraduate liberal arts music departments to offer majoring and minoring student recitals, Drew also allows non-degree-seekers to perform as well, soliciting students taking individual music lessons, playing in a band, or pursuing music independently.

The concerts are held at Drew’s Concert Hall, complete with state-of-the-art acoustics, these concerts provide a unique opportunity for students of all levels of musical commitment and experience a chance to perform.

“The most unique aspect of our Music at Noon concerts is the venue,” said Trevor Weston, professor and chair of music.

“It is one of the best in the country. The individuals who designed it went on to design Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall. Our students have the opportunity to perform in one of the best small concert halls in the area where internationally acclaimed groups like CHamber Music Society at Lincoln Center prefer to perform.”

Weston noted the close link between performing and learning, but also the far-reaching implications of getting in front of a crowd and representing yourself.

“All of our students will someday apply for a job, or have an interview—have to stand in front of an audience and present their work, via a speech, portfolio, etc. Music performance helps students practice for these future events. I know that performing choral music from an early age and the organ made teaching much easier for me. We can consider each performance a mini-immersive experience.”
