Henry Arthur C’24 will spend his first summer after Drew researching earth rotation irregularities
May 2024 – Henry Arthur C’24 will spend the first months since graduating from Drew University fulfilling a lifelong dream—working at NASA.
Arthur was recently selected to intern with NASA’s Geodesy and Geophysics Laboratory at the Goddard Space Flight Center.
The computer science major will research earth rotation irregularities and write code to make computations on large datasets.
Looking back on his time at Drew, Arthur pointed to research experiences that have prepared him for the prestigious internship at NASA.
As a senior, Arthur worked in Drew’s Particle Physics Group, connected to Drew’s membership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
“This opportunity gave me experience working in experimental physics and challenged me to learn difficult topics,” said Arthur, who had access to elite research facilities and technologies as part of the project.
“At FermiLab, I learned how scientists and engineers from many institutions collaborate. Science is a very social endeavor, and the lessons I learned on the ability to communicate effectively on projects will be important during my time at NASA.”
In addition to hands-on research experience, Arthur noted a critical piece of his time at Drew—mentorship.
“The mentorship of my advisor, (Associate Professor of Physics Kamal) Benslama, was invaluable in navigating this unfamiliar landscape and being a consistent source of support.”
