Drew University Transfer Student Ben Castro C’25 Sought an Active Community

“I fell in love with the campus environment”

May 2024 – After earning an associate degree from Union College of Union County, NJ (UCNJ), Ben Castro C’25 was unsure of where he wanted to continue his education and complete his bachelor’s degree.

A campus visit to Drew University eased his indecisiveness. “I fell in love with the campus environment,” he said. His decision to join Drew was solidified a few weeks later during an Admitted Students event where he was able to meet with students and faculty. “They provided me with amazing information, resources, and advice, which was instrumental in me realizing that this was the university for me.”

What’s more, Castro knew a few students also transferring to Drew from UCNJ. “I knew a small community of familiar faces here from the start,” he said.

The simplicity of the transfer process, made possible by Director of Transfer & Continuing Education Sunita Bhargava, allowed for a seamless transition. “Sunita’s dedication to her duties and her kind heartedness was instrumental in allowing me to feel more comfortable with the entire transfer process,” said Castro. “She always answered any questions or concerns that my family and I had, and that’s something I am still truly grateful for.”

Castro, a rising senior, is double majoring in marketing and business with a minor in history. An active member of the Drew community, Castro is a tour guide, orientation leader, and on the mascot team supporting Drew’s Admissions Department. He is also a board member on the Budgets and Organization Board and vice president of the Drew Commuters Association, both student-led organizations. “I always push to get involved on campus with the various club activities and opportunities. Not only can you make lifelong and amazing friends, you will also feel more integrated into the community.”

Castro has participated twice in the semi-annual Bear Den event where students present their semester projects to a panel of alums, faculty, staff, and industry professional judges for critical feedback. “Participating in Bear Den on two separate occasions has been one of the highlights of my time at Drew,” he said. “These events significantly contributed to my professional and personal development.”

Castro offered advice to future students contemplating a transfer to Drew. “I encourage you to do your research and visit,” he said. “It is crucial that you are aware of the many wonderful programs, resources, and experiences Drew offers to the vibrant student community here.”

After graduation, Castro hopes to find an opportunity in marketing, advertising, or communications. “As someone who is very passionate about content creation and social media as a whole, I am determined to succeed in these fields. Some of my personal career goals include personal development and becoming an expert in my fields. With only a year remaining in my time here at Drew, I will do everything that I can to ensure that I make it there.”
