Drew University Receives $500,000 Grant to Support Theatre & Dance Internships

In honor of former President Governor Thomas H. Kean from the Carnegie Corporation of New York

June 2024 – Drew University received a $500,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to support the Thomas H. Kean Theatre Internship Fund and underwrite summer internships for college students enrolled in the Theatre Arts and Dance programs.

The grant was awarded in honor of Kean’s 30 years of service to the philanthropic foundations’ board of trustees, which began in 1991 while he was serving as President of Drew University. His 15-year presidential tenure left a significant impact on the institution, which is still felt today.

“This gift from the Carnegie Corporation honoring Governor Kean’s legacy at both of our institutions will have a significant impact on the lives of our students in the Theatre Arts and Dance programs,” said President Hilary L. Link, PhD. “This generous funding supports Drew’s commitment to all students participating in immersive experiences such as internships. We are grateful to the Corporation for including Drew University in their recognition of Governor Kean’s service.”

The Theatre Arts and Dance programs at Drew train students in the full range of disciplines while providing mentorship, support, and professional development opportunities. Through Drew’s New York Theatre semester, students are immersed in the city’s theatre scene through coursework, internships, and networking opportunities with theatre professionals.

“I am thankful to the Corporation for providing this grant to support student internships in the theatre arts and dance program at Drew University in my honor,” said Governor Kean. “Providing students with meaningful internships in the arts helps in building connections for future career successes. It has been a privilege to serve both institutions during my career.”
