Selected for books published between 2022-23
November 2024- Drew University has announced the alumni and faculty winners of the 2024 Bela Kornitzer Award for Nonfiction.
Drew Theological School alum Beatrice Marovich T’14 received the award for her work, Sister Death: Political Theologies for Living and Dying (Columbia University Press, 2023). Marovich is currently an Assistant Professor of Theological Studies at Hanover College.
Shakti Jaising, Associate Professor of English and Director of Film Studies, received the faculty award for her book Beyond Alterity: Contemporary Indian Fiction and the Neoliberal Script (Liverpool University Press, 2023).
The 2024 awardees were chosen from a diverse field of nominations for books published between 2022 and 2023 and each will receive a $2,000 prize.
The nominations were reviewed by a panel of Drew faculty and staff: Elizabeth Leonard, Director of University Libraries and Special Collections; Jesse Mann, Drew Theological School Librarian; Wendy Kolmar, Professor of English and Women’s and Gender Studies; and Tami Navarro, Assistant Professor of Pan-African Studies.
The Bela Kornitzer Award was established by Alicia Karpati and George Karpati, in honor of Bela Kornitzer, Mrs. Karpati’s brother. The award recognizes the achievements of Hungarian-born journalist and author Bela Kornitzer (1910-1964). Mr. Kornitzer’s archives are housed in the Drew University Library.
