Where They’re Going: Beyza Yilmaz C’22

“The opportunity to work in the lab independently for my research project not only helped me gain a ton of experience and improve my technique, but it also made me realize that I would like to continue doing research in the future.”

May 2022 – We’re taking a look at where some of the Drew University College of Liberal Arts Class of 2022 is heading.

Beyza Yilmaz C’22

ACS-chemistry major with a biochemistry emphasis

Co-head of Muslim Student Association; member of Drew Roosevelt Network and Students for Justice in Palestine; inductee of the Drew chapter of the Gamma Sigma Epsilon national chemistry honor society; former student government vice president.

Where she’s going

Yilmaz will begin a PhD program in chemistry at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York this fall.

The small school experience

“I believe that one of the biggest factors that helped me get here was the opportunity to build a close relationship with my professors and my peers. I really appreciate that Drew is a small school which allowed me to get individual attention from my professors and get hands-on experience with laboratory techniques and instrumentation.”

Importance of hands-on learning

“The opportunity to work in the lab independently for my research project not only helped me gain a ton of experience and improve my technique, but it also made me realize that I would like to continue doing research in the future.”

The value of a liberal arts education

“I had the opportunity to take a bunch of courses from various disciplines throughout my undergraduate chemistry career such as neuroscience, political science, philosophy, linguistics, art history, and others. I am a big advocate of interdisciplinary education so I truly appreciate that Drew gave me the opportunity to explore and learn about other fields and expand my knowledge and not solely focus on chemistry and STEM.”
