Off-Campus Work Authorization for International Students (F-1 visa)

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is defined by US Citizenship and Immigration Services as employment which is an integral part of an established curriculum, including alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the institution.

Types of CPT

There are two types of Curricular Practical Training:  a required internship experience to meet graduation requirements or an optional course taken with an internship component (that is not required), but still an integral part of the program’s established curriculum.

CPT is issued for a semester period and should be requested prior to the start of the semester.  If an internship is extended for an additional semester(s), students must register for academic credit and receive approval from the academic department and ISSS.  A new I-20 is created for each semester of CPT with updates to the student’s SEVIS record.

List A below includes courses for degree programs that require an internship or practicum experience.  Similarly, List B includes courses that are a valuable and integral part of a student’s academic experience and where academic credit earned will count toward graduation requirements.
