Travel
Explore the picturesque medieval university city of Freiburg, Germany, and walk through its Old Town with aqueduct-like water channels from the 13th century. Adventure through the Upper Rhine River region by hiking the stunning Black Forest of Germany at the doorstep of the city, and participating in multiple daylong excursions to world-famous locations in Switzerland and Germany, including Basel, Lake Constance, and Neuschwanstein Castle.
Rethink
Engage with the modern history and culture of Germanic communities and their conceptions of nature. Examine the urban spaces that shape the human experiences in Freiburg and how residents integrate “green” practices. Dissect the process of how national and municipal leaders determine policy solutions for environmental and sustainability issues. Engage with the attitudes of people toward sustainability initiatives and understand the intersection of nature, culture, and urban development.
Explore
Through lectures and field trips to locations such as the Black Forest Open Air Museum and the Vauban green district of Freiburg, students will explore historical and contemporary village and urban spaces and learn firsthand about urban planning, energy, mobility, green business, and social innovations in Freiburg and the Rhine region.
Connect
Identify the hallmarks of a Green City, examining the initiatives and measures in Freiburg with direct sustainability outcomes. Explore the possibilities and limitations in other international cities, including here in the United States. Understand the historical, ecological, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability in urban areas. Closely examine the value, urgency, and global impact of sustainability initiatives in our everyday lives. This program is designed for students interested in environmental studies, urban planning, German studies, history, and global politics.
