January 2019 – Drew University’s Patrick McGuinn is once again nationally recognized as an influencer on education policy.
McGuinn, a professor of political science and education, is quoted regularly in the Associated Press and other major media outlets about federal and state education politics and the U.S. Department of Education. As such, he’s a prominent faculty expert with a national profile.
Each year, Education Week blogger Frederick Hess identifies the top 200 scholars in the U.S. who help shape public discourse on education in his Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings. McGuinn, who began teaching at Drew in 2005 and is also a senior researcher at the Consortium for Policy Research in Education, has made the list annually since its inception in 2011.
“As I see it, the extraordinary policy scholar excels in five areas: disciplinary scholarship, policy analysis and popular writing, convening and shepherding collaborations, providing incisive media commentary and speaking in the public square,” said Hess. “Such efforts convey real information and help spark useful discussion.”
McGuinn said that “it’s an honor to be recognized for trying to advance the national conversation about how to improve America’s public schools and expand educational opportunity to the many students who have historically been denied it.” He added that he uses his “public policy research and conversations with policymakers to enhance my teaching in undergraduate and graduate education classes at Drew.”
