Drew Art Professors Earn Fellowships

Among just 25 fellows of the NJ State Council on the Arts.

April 2019 – Two Drew University art professors earned fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Claire Sherman received an award for painting and Raymond Saá Stein received an award for works on paper. They’re among just 25 fellows this year.

Sherman, who creates paintings, prints and drawings inspired by nature, said the award will “help support a new body of work in the studio in ways reaching from travel to studio material expenses.” Much of her recent work is based on plants from the Pacific Northwest and she hopes to return there.

Many of Sherman’s students are pursuing double majors, combining art with classes in science, computer science, psychology and other disciplines. “I’m always interested in finding that crossover and how students can bring their passions in other areas into their work in the studio,” she said. Her art, which has been featured in Harper’s Magazine, can be seen here.

For Stein, who’s work encompasses collages on paper and cardboard, murals and oil paintings, the award will help cover rent on his studio.

This semester Stein is teaching a class on collage and a senior studio class that he describes as art majors “building their portfolios and discovering their own visual language.” You can see his art here.
