Unlocking a true global theological education
August 2024 – Drew Theological School’s beautiful and historic campus is a hub for global theological learning, long embracing the belief that learning happens everywhere, not just in Madison, New Jersey.
With in-person, synchronous, asynchronous, and blended learning options, Drew’s student-centered programs allows students to earn a Theological School degree beyond geographic boundaries.
All four of Drew’s master’s degrees are offered fully online or in hybrid modalities. Several of Drew’s Doctor of Ministry (DMin) cohorts are also offered online or in a hybrid option.
Because of Drew’s flexible hybrid program, it is not mandatory for United Methodist students to relocate to New Jersey to earn a degree from the Theological School. Students may fulfill the 26 credit UMC residency requirement by visiting Drew’s campus as few as four intensive weeks over three years.
Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry (MATM) alum Catey Miller T’24 earned her Drew degree online and part-time from her home in North Carolina, allowing her to continue to work full-time and remain active in her church.
“There are so many students from across the world in my classes at Drew that I never would have met otherwise,” said Miller.
Recent Master of Divinity (MDiv) alum Adrian Bruder T’24 earned his Drew degree online from his hometown in Austin, Texas. “Drew has really done a great job of facilitating conversations and sharing what we’ve learned as a community when we meet in class virtually, for in-person sessions, and online,” he said.
The Theological School is committed to ensure all online students learn in community, inside and outside of the virtual classroom. The Drew Community Chapel bi-weekly services are offered virtually, as are most community events—allowing for worship, interaction, and community-building.
“I have chosen to participate in Thursday chapel as often as possible and I really appreciate that Drew makes worship and other community events accessible to all,” said Susan Mercer T’24, who completed her MDiv from Kansas.
“A significant benefit is the rich diversity that comes from my classmates,” said Mercer. “I have been in classrooms with folks in five-six different time zones—from Madison to places near and far!”
