Drew University Welcomes Artist in Residence Bahareh Khoshooee

Thoughts and Prayers from the Glowing Rectangle is on view through November 26

October 2024 – Drew University has welcomed Bahareh Khoshooee as an artist-in-residence. Her exhibition, Thoughts and Prayers from the Glowing Rectangle, is on view through November 26 at The Korn Gallery.

Khoshooee’s recent work examines the role of everyday technology in shaping and mediating personal and collective experiences of grief. Her work asks whether the same technologies that expose catastrophic events can be repurposed as tools for liberation, connection, and collective healing.

Khoshooee’s residency will involve the creation and exhibition of new video installation works incorporating 3D scanning, performance, animation, and projection, made in collaboration with Drew students across several disciplines in and beyond the classroom.

“We are incredibly grateful to have Bahareh Khoshooee join Drew this fall to work in conversation and interdisciplinary collaboration with our student community about how we process and heal from grieving,” said Assistant Professor of Digital Media Ryan Woodring, who curated the exhibition.

“I think of her exhibition and attendant grief mediation sessions as literally creating space for our student, staff, and faculty populations to grieve the difficult personal and catastrophic interpersonal events that reach us via our hyper-connected devices,” continued Woodring. “Khoshooee, a diasporic artist of Iranian descent, critically examines the dual-nature of post-internet technologies in mediating these experiences.”

Khoshooee, a multidisciplinary artist and educator, uses digital time-based strategies in presenting work that fuses video projection mapping, sculpture, and performance to explore the un-capturable qualities of diasporic bodies. Khoshooee has exhibited her work internationally including at Baxter St CCNY, The Elizabeth Foundation for The Arts, The Orlando Museum of Art, Rawson Projects, and the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg. Her work has been featured in The Huffington Post, The Guardian, Artnet News, Vice, and The Creators Project

A reception and artist talk with Khoshooee will take place on Wednesday, November 13, from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Korn Gallery.

Khoshooee is hosting technology-assisted grief meditation and artmaking sessions for interested students, faculty, and staff on Tuesdays from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Korn Gallery throughout her residency.

The Korn Gallery is located in the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts at Drew University and is open Tuesday through Friday from noon – 4 p.m. and by appointment.
