Drew University PhD Alum Ronald J. Allen G’77 to Publish New Book

The accomplished author has published over 40 books

August 2025 – Drew University PhD alum and accomplished author Ronald J. Allen G’77 will publish his latest book this fall, Second Thoughts about Hell. Co-written with theologian Robert D. Cornwall and released by Westminster John Knox Press, the book guides readers through the historical interpretation of hell.

Allen, Professor Emeritus of Preaching and Gospels and Letters at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana, has written or edited more than 40 books, including A Faith of Your Own: Naming What You Really Believe.

Drawing on sources from the Hebrew Bible to contemporary theology, Allen and Cornwall includes multiple contemporary theological positions on hell, such as those of liberation theologians and process theologians. Through describing and explaining these different points of view, Allen and Cornwall allow the reader to decide what view(s) of hell make the most theological and ethical sense to them.

Second Thoughts about Hell includes a study guide for group discussion and learning. An accompanying online resource designed for pastors who want to design topical and lectionary-based sermon series on hell is also available.

In retirement, Allen works with lectionary preaching groups, supports commissioned ministers, leads Bible studies, retreats, and other events in congregations, regions, and the general church.
