Drew University Professor’s Book Named Award Finalist

Kristen Turner’s Teaching Writing in the Age of AI earns praise from Foreword Indies

March 2026 – Drew University Professor and Director of Teacher Education Kristen Turner’s recent book, Teaching Writing in the Age of AI, has been named a finalist for a 2025 Foreword Indies award for books on education.

Published in October 2025 and co-authored by Central Michigan University Professor Troy Hicks, the book lays out strategies for teachers of secondary students to incorporate emerging technologies in the classroom.

The book evolved in part from conversations Turner had with Drew students and teachers who were trying to understand how AI is reshaping writing, learning, and thinking.

“At Drew, much of my work focuses on helping students and educators navigate emerging technologies with curiosity and care,” said Turner. “This book reflects that same commitment—helping teachers and students think critically about AI while still centering human creativity, voice, and inquiry.”

Given the ties to her work at Drew, being named a Foreword Indies finalist is a particularly meaningful honor.

“My hope is that this book helps educators move beyond fear or hype and instead design thoughtful ways to teach writing in an AI-rich world.”
