Whether your calling is inside or outside the Church community, the 42-credit Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry (MATM) equips you with the education and skills to answer it.
Drew’s MATM program is rooted in the long tradition of Wesleyan and Methodist commitment to higher education. It offers students the opportunity to prepare for public leadership or a specialized vocation through deep theological and ethical reflection informed by biblical, historical, theological and practical sources.
Program of Study: Change Your World
The MATM program consists of a core curriculum of multidisciplinary theological training rooted in the mission of the church in the world, a vocational pathway and a vocationally-relevant contextual internship.
Missional (15 credits)
Required missional and multidisciplinary courses ground all students in religious heritage, theological and spiritual depth, moral integrity, pastoral practice and peace with neighbors. They have been designed by Drew’s renowned faculty in different fields and are grounded in classical theological disciplines and infused with pastoral practices, community partnerships and gospel values. Some of the core courses that you will take are:
- Bible and Its Interpreters
- Global Faiths and the Earth
- Transforming Theologies
- Identity, Spirituality, and Vocation
Vocational (12 credits)
You will choose one of five flexible vocational pathways to build the skills that will help you prepare for specialized ministries such as community organizing, pastoral care, campus ministry, and more. The pathways are as follows:
- Ecology and Religion (ECRE)
- Music, Worship, and the Arts (MWA)
- Pastoral Care (PASC)
- Social Justice Advocacy (SOJA)
- Theology and Ministry (TMHI)
Immersive Learning for Leadership (3-6 credits)
You will engage in experimental and experiential learning to help you develop adaptive leadership skills. In this sequence, you engage real-world contexts and challenges and test and adapt solutions by either completing a Year-Long Vocational Internship or participating in a Practicum sequence (either as a Vocational Apprenticeship, Justice Ministry Education, or Clinical Practical Education). Additionally, you are required to take one Problem-based learning (PBL) course.
Electives (11-13 credits)
Finally, you must complete 11-13 credits from either the Theological School or Caspersen School of Graduate Studies course listings. In these, you may earn an optional concentration by completing four courses within one of the following categories:
- Africana and African American Religion (AFAM)
- Religion and Ecology (ECO)
- Religion and Social Justice (SJA)
- Women’s and Gender Studies (WSTT)
- Conflict Resolution (CRES)
