Discover the beauty and rich history of Barcelona, a vibrant Mediterranean city and home to the unique Catalan identity and cuisine. At the heart of this program is the exploration of the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s as a defining chapter in Spain’s history and culture. Through visits to important historic sites, neighborhoods, and museums directly connected to the conflict, you will investigate its complexities, understand its profound cultural impact, and trace how its legacies continue to shape modern-day Spanish society.
Meet with historians, political analysts, and experts from cultural institutions who will share engaging insights into the war’s impact on Spain’s political, social, and cultural landscape. Dive into key topics such as the causes and consequences of the conflict; the role of American and international volunteer troops, artists, and journalists in Spain’s fight for democracy; and the lasting effects on Spanish society and the world today.
Take classes at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, receiving language instruction at your proficiency level, and practice your Spanish-language skills both in and outside of the classroom. Tour museums and heritage sites and explore markets and neighborhoods. Write about your experiences and complete a research-based project. Take part in excursions to historical landmarks, contemporary museums, and archives related to the Spanish Civil War—all grouped thematically and historically to provide a rich understanding of the city’s cultural and political legacy.
Fulfills Immersive Experience Requirement
This program is designed for all majors. Students will live with a host family, fostering daily interaction and cultural exchange. Immersion in a different language,
customs, and social norms will challenge students to engage deeply with cultural nuances and adapt to diverse perspectives.
