Harlem’s rich cultural and artistic legacy, historical landscape, and contemporary realities encourage students to explore the iconic city as inspiration and resource, centering on identity, social justice, and community engagement.
Examine the intersection of art, identity, and social justice while gaining tools to incorporate place-based education to curate transformative, culturally-responsive learning experiences. Students will be able to critically reflect on their own unique identities, biases, and privileges, and how they impact their future as educators and professionals.
Adventure through Harlem through visual art, music, dance, theatre, and storytelling. Interact with the city’s cultural institutions, schools, and residents by engaging in workshop activities like poetry writing, music analysis, and mural creation. This program will draw on a variety of cultural expressions from the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary movements, emphasizing how art reflects diverse identities and voices.
Fulfills Immersive Experience Requirement
This program is designed for all majors, with a particular focus for both art and education majors and minors and Action Scholars. Students will unpack oral histories by listening to and documenting the stories of Harlem and gaining insight into personal and community struggles and triumphs.
