Welcome to the CAE and UWC!

The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) and the University Writing Center (UWC) are vital parts of your student success network.  With support in areas such as subject tutoring (e.g. Math, Science, Humanities, etc.), writing, and academic coaching, we take pride in supporting you in achieving all of your academic goals.

We provide trained and College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified peer support to help you stay on track and meet your academic goals.  We value the reciprocal nature of knowledge and promote respect for the diverse talents, beliefs, and backgrounds of all members of the Drew community, which is at the core of a true liberal arts education.

The following CAE academic support resources are offered at no extra cost to all Drew students, faculty, and staff.

THE UNIVERSITY WRITING CENTER

Students from all schools (CLA, CSGS, THEO) can meet with trained and CRLA certified Writing Specialists for support with writing tasks at any stage of the writing process, including brainstorming and organizing ideas, structuring a paper, drafting and revising, and editing grammar and syntax.  Our Writing Specialists also support students beyond the classroom with personal statements and graduate school application prompts.  Our mission is to support students to ensure their development as readers, critical thinkers, and writers so that they may succeed at Drew and beyond.

ACADEMIC COACHING

Is procrastination your Achilles’ heel?  Do you need to improve your study skills?  Are you unsure what notes you should be taking?  A trained and CRLA certified peer Academic Coach will work with you to help bolster your areas of weakness as you develop skills for success both in the classroom and beyond.

While subject tutoring focuses on helping students understand a specific subject, academic coaching helps students cultivate general academic skills. Though all subject tutoring draws slightly on many of the skills related to academic coaching, peer Academic Coaches specialize in helping students grow in broad academic skills such as the following:

  • Time Management
  • Overcoming Procrastination
  • Organization
  • Goal Setting
  • Study Skills
  • Note Taking
  • Exam and Quiz Preparation

Peer Academic Coaches work in both the CAE and the UWC, and are available on both schedules for booking.

SUBJECT TUTORING

Trained and CRLA certified peer Subject Tutors are ready to review course material with you and help you prepare for assignments and exams.  The CAE provides tutoring for most courses and makes every effort to arrange for tutoring in all courses through special requests.  The CAE employs many Drew students who have demonstrated academic excellence and good communication skills as our Subject Tutors to help their fellow students.  If you need help understanding concepts for a specific course, peer subject tutoring might be for you!
