Providing undergraduate students the opportunity to study in the field of education through two distinct tracks
April 2022 – Drew University has expanded its education offering to undergraduate students by adding two new minors, one in education and society and another in teaching.
Drew’s minor in education and society provides students with an interdisciplinary perspective on both the role of education in society and how societal factors influence learners and learning. Students will be encouraged to view education through a lens of equity and justice while seeking solutions to inequity.
The education and society minor does not lead to teacher certification, rather it allows students to pursue an understanding of the philosophical, political, psychological, and sociological factors that impact learners and learning in the American system of public education.
The new teaching minor prepares students to enter Drew’s Caspersen School of Graduate Studies Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program to become a certified public school teacher in New Jersey. The curriculum counts for both an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree as part of the 4+1 Teaching Dual-Degree program.
“After 15 years certifying teachers in New Jersey through the Master of Arts in Teaching program, we are excited to offer undergraduate students the opportunity to study the field of education through the new minors,” said Kristen Turner, professor and director of teacher education.
“Education is a truly interdisciplinary field, and whether students want to become certified to teach or whether they want to understand issues of equity and justice in education more broadly and apply that knowledge in a different field, they can find their home at Drew.”
