Sean Hewitt, Director of the Center for Civic Engagement
What is your perspective of this election?
To those concerned about the outcome or integrity of this election, emphasize the importance of civic engagement as a tool for unity and progress. Our society thrives when we, as a community, come together with open minds, genuinely listening and engaging with those who may hold different views. Connecting through our differences and appreciating diverse perspectives can strengthen our trust in one another and the process.
What would you say to people on either side of the aisle who are concerned about the outcome?
While disagreements may arise, our commitment to individual and collective healing is crucial as we move beyond the election process. Reducing the divisive barriers that often hold us back starts with respecting ourselves, actively listening to each other’s concerns, and encouraging transparency and accountability through deliberative and informed participation. It’s through these practices that we can reassure citizens and strengthen their trust in the democratic process, thereby increasing the integrity of our governing system and making space for meaningful change.
