Values that shape the Drew experience
April 2025 – At Drew Theological School, education is more than the pursuit of knowledge—it’s a transformative journey rooted in shared values, spiritual formation, and community. Through dedicated faculty mentorship, dynamic student organizations, meaningful community events, and worship life, the Theological School offers a distinctly inclusive, vibrant, and welcoming environment where students are prepared to lead lives of justice, compassion, and faith.
The Theological School’s faculty and staff are deeply committed to embracing the school’s mission in every aspect of the academic experience. This mission is not only reflected in curriculum design and student learning outcomes, but also embodied in the ways students are supported and empowered to thrive—spiritually, intellectually, and socially.
DREW THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
Rooted in the Methodist tradition of innovative and bold interpretations of Christian theology and spiritual practices, we empower creative thought and courageous action to advance justice, peace and love of God, neighbor, and the earth
Drew’s faculty firmly believes that engaging the world’s challenges and struggles for social and ecological justice is critical to be integrated throughout the student learning experience. The Theological School’s shared values are not theoretical ideals—they are lived commitments that permeate classrooms, worship spaces, student life, and field experiences. These values are integral to the student journey:
- Dismantling Racism, Racial Justice
- Interfaith and Ecumenical understanding and Solidarity
- Ecological Sustainability and Environmental Justice
- Sexual and Gender Justice
“Drew Theological School’s shared values are a guiding principle in everything we do,” said Theological School Dean Edwin David Aponte. “Now, more than ever, we must put those values into practice both as an encouraging example and as a guiding light for our students and the communities they serve.”
Theological School students experience a rich spiritual and communal life supported by bi-weekly chapel services, offered both in person and online, are open to the Drew community. Special guest preachers are welcomed regularly.
Student-led groups, including the Korean Caucus, Spectrum (LGBTQIA+ advocacy), WoMa (Women’s Ministries), and AfriSCad (African Student Caucus), provide vital spaces for identity-affirming support, advocacy, and leadership development. These groups foster belonging and help ensure that every student’s voice is heard and valued.
Through immersive experiences, students are encouraged to deepen their spiritual lives while developing practical skills for ministry, chaplaincy, social justice work, and beyond.
The Theological School’s educational approach is grounded in four core capacities, forming students who are prepared to:
- Interpret texts and contexts critically, creatively, and faithfully
- Embody a vision of radical personal and social holiness
- Mobilize diverse communities for healing, justice, and transformation
- Improvise with wisdom and boldness in service of a flourishing world
As Drew continues to navigate the shifting landscape of theological education and global society, an unwavering commitment to justice, love, and community that guides students every step of the way remains a constant.
