The Korn Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition, From the Built World, by artist-in-residence Jim Osman, on view September 25 through October 15, 2025. The Gallery is located in the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts at Drew University and is open Tuesday through Friday 12:00-4pm, and by appointment. The exhibition, curated by Raymond Saá, includes a sculptural installation in the Mead Hall foyer, as well as a large-scale, site-specific ‘wall drawing’ within the Gallery itself.

About the artist:

Jim Osman was born and raised in New York City and received his MFA from Queens College.  He has been exhibiting his sculpture since the mid-1980s throughout the United States, in gallery and museum solo and group exhibitions, as well as outdoor installations. His work has been reviewed in Hyperallergic, Sculpture Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, The New Criterion, The New York Sun, and Artnews, among others.  He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 2019 and has been a member of The American Abstract Artists since 2014; and its past President.

About the exhibition:

The works within From the Built World, most developed during his residency, meditate on the variety of visual reactions that can occur when abstracting vernacular architecture. Osman borrows his materials from industrial settings, ranging from joint compound to walnut, oak and plywood. These defined objects are made anew, transitive through an altered context. His unapologetic color schemes further complicate presumptions about material purpose. Space and depth are magnified, contorted into unfamiliar, yet inviting landscapes. Through converging and contrasting principles, the featured ‘wall drawing’ reconsiders rigid boundaries of medium. Presented alongside this wall work is a veritable bounty of wooden constructions, varying in scale and structure, which collectively invites viewers to contemplatively explore its topography. By moving around the space and examining the work from every angle possible, Osman allows his audience personal agency in determining the shape and identity of his fabrications. From the Built World exemplifies the spontaneous nature of art, simultaneously sparking questions about its assumed structures and definitions.     — Annabelle Smith (Drew ’26)
