Drew University Offers Dual-Degree Programs in Clinical and Non-Clinical Health Fields

Through Drew and renowned partner institutions

September 2024 – Drew University, in collaboration with its Caspersen School of Graduate Studies and renowned academic partners, offers a range of Dual-Degree programs in both clinical and non-clinical medical and health fields.

The programs allow students to earn both an undergraduate and advanced degree at an accelerated and flexible pace—saving time and money.

For students seeking professions in health care, Drew offers several Dual-Degree programs designed to couple a liberal arts education with specific expertise in their areas of interest.

Drew’s Dual-Degree in Medical Humanities, Health, & Society allows students to complete a bachelor degree in the major of their choice, and proceed to Caspersen to earn a Master of Arts in Medical Humanities, Health, & Society. “Fostering health and humanizing health care is the mission of the low residency Master of Arts in Medical Humanities, Health, & Society,” said Merel Visse, associate professor and director of the Medical & Health Humanities program.

“Students learn about how health, well-being, and medicine intersect with the humanities and creative arts,” continued Visse. “This program brings students humanistic approaches to transform health care by addressing ethical, medical, and social challenges such as inequity, disparities, and workforce burnout. It teaches a better understanding of the human and social condition, including listening to the needs of patients, their families, and health professionals in all health contexts.”

Through academic partnerships, Drew also offers Dual-Degree programs with nationally-recognized and reputable universities.

First-year prospective students may apply for simultaneous admission to both Drew and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) for admission to the Medicine Dual-Degree. The program provides students with the opportunity to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in just seven years. Students complete the first three years of their undergraduate studies at Drew, followed by four years of medical education and clinical training at NJMS.

In addition, Drew offers several 4+1 or 4+2 Dual-Degrees in the medical and health fields with Boston University and Drexel University.

Students interested in pursuing a career in public health have the opportunity to enter the Public Health Dual-Degree with Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) Select Scholars program.

The program provides Drew undergraduates the opportunity to explore different options available in the field of public health and to connect with Boston University mentors for academic and career advising. Students accepted into the highly competitive graduate program at BUSPH may choose to pursue a Master of Public Health, a Master of Science in Population Health Research, or a Master of Science in Applied Biostatistics.

“Our partnership with the BUSPH Select Scholars provides our undergraduates with an opportunity to transition seamlessly from Drew’s public health program to one of the top-ranked public health graduate programs in the country,” stated Christina McKittrick, associate professor of biology and director of the program in Public Health. “Students pursuing majors and minors in public health at Drew will have the opportunity to expand upon the knowledge and skills they acquire at Drew as they prepare for a career in this exciting and increasingly important field.”

The Nursing Dual-Degree program with Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions allows students to obtain a liberal arts education and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in only five years. Students attend Drew for four years, and then earn their BSN at Drexel through the Accelerated Career Entry (ACE) program in nursing.

A Nutrition/Dietetics Dual-Degree is also offered in tandem with Drexel. A six-year program, students will earn their bachelor’s degree at Drew and a Master of Science in Human Nutrition at Drexel. Students attend Drew for three and a half years, and then earn their master’s degree at Drexel in eighteen months. The program may be extended to six years if desired.

In all, Drew offers 20 Dual-Degree programs with Caspersen, Drew Theological School, and other partnering institutions, including Columbia, NYU, and Duke.
