Drew University’s Dual-Degree in Cybersecurity with New York University Gains Traction

Students excel, interest grows

July 2023 – Launched in fall 2021, Drew University’s cybersecurity major and Dual-Degree in cybersecurity with New York University Tandon School of Engineering continues to gain popularity among students.

Cybersecurity is a new but growing discipline in higher education due to the consistently increasing demand for cybersecurity experts across many industries.

Students majoring in cybersecurity at Drew have the opportunity to gain guaranteed admission to NYU Tandon’s 10-course online Master of Science (MS) program in cybersecurity, ranked among the top five cybersecurity master’s programs in the country by CSO.

Admission in the Dual-Degree program guarantees a spot as a Cybersecurity Fellow, which comes with a substantial scholarship.

Students are able to take NYU Tandon online courses while still attending Drew, or to enroll directly at NYU Tandon after graduation from Drew.

Mahmoud Alminawi C’21 graduated from the program in Drew/NYU Tandon Cybersecurity Dual-Degree in 2023 with a distinguished academic achievement award from NYU Tandon, a testament to the preparedness he gained at Drew.

“We are excited about the success of the young but growing program,” said John H. Evans Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science and Chair of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Business Sarah Abramowitz.

“Our program contains a liberal arts approach with flexibility through elective offerings for students to choose emphases in software, systems, or interdisciplinary contexts. This formula sets our students up for success.”

Several Drew students will transition to NYU Tandon as part of the Dual-Degree this coming fall.

The Dual-Degree was inspired by the pathway taken by Luke Henry C’21, who enrolled in the NYU Tandon MS in cybersecurity program upon graduating from Drew. A conversation with associate professor of computer science Ziyuan Meng sparked the idea to pursue the pathway as an official Drew Dual-Degree program.

“An interesting aspect of this particular Dual-Degree program that it was student-initiated,” said Meng. “It also helps explain why it’s especially appealing to our students and why they are so successful in it.”

“If it were not for all the support from the professors and advisors at Drew, there is no doubt in my mind I would not be where I am today,” said Henry. “Having recently graduated with my master’s in cybersecurity and entering the workforce, I am thrilled to hear that others can follow in my path from Drew to NYU.”
