Mohamed Munisi G’23 on his Journey from Tanzania to New York City

The MFin alum credits Drew for his successful career pathway in finance

March 2024 – Just three years ago, Mohamed Munisi G’23 was working as a distribution team leader at Coca Cola Beverage Africa in his native Tanzania.

Today, Munisi is a graduate of Drew’s Caspersen School of Graduate Studies with a Master of Science in Finance (MFin) with a concentration in Investment Management. He is employed by Carey & Co. in New York City, a non-profit leadership firm that provides outsourced financial leadership and services that support efficiency and growth. Through Carey & Co, Munisi currently supports the Jewish Federations of North America as a Finance Associate.

His journey has been quick and unexpected, and his career trajectory has changed completely.

It all started with a management trainee program at Coca Cola, which helped identify Munisi’s need to further his strength and knowledge in finance. A financial course had been offered by Coca Cola, but it entailed travel, which was curtailed at the start of the pandemic.

Munisi’s cousin, who is attending college in the U.S., encouraged him to research graduate programs in the U.S.

Munisi came upon Drew’s website and was intrigued. After connecting with Chelsea Capstraw, Assistant Director of Caspersen Admissions, and Steve Firestone, Associate Teaching Professor of Finance, Associate Chair Department of Business, Munisi knew he was coming to Drew. “They sounded very helpful, I knew this is the place I wanted to be,” he said.

“Professor Firestone is the best,” said Munisi. “I really appreciate his effort. He tries to help every single student pursue their dream.”

Drew’s MFin program not only provides the knowledge and expertise needed to excel in the world of finance, but mentorship and strong industry connections help with career placement.

Munisi landed his position at Carey & Co. through a recommendation by alum Tyler Morse C’11. Munisi hopes to pay his success forward by recommending and helping other students from his home country to come study in the U.S. at Drew. His brother, Mo Mshana G’25, has also come to Drew to earn his MFin.
