Matt Agudelo C’24 Networks to an Internship at RBC

Using LinkedIn and Drew’s alum network

June 2024 – When recent alum Matt Agudelo C’24, a finance major with a minor in economics, was seeking a summer internship, he turned to LinkedIn.

An opening in the Royal Bank of Canada’s (RBC) New York Office piqued his interest, and he networked himself right in the door.

After applying online, Agudelo followed up with conversations with dozens of RBC employees, one of which was with a Drew alum—a contact facilitated through Drew’s New York Semester on Wall Street program. With persistence and smart networking, Agudelo was offered the internship.

At RBC, Agudelo is a sales & trading summer analyst on the Asset Backed Securities/Collateralized Loan Obligations desk. “My responsibilities include getting familiar with the product, which is relatively complex considering it is a structured product,” he said. “My days consist of shadowing salespeople and traders while identifying patterns and tendencies as they help facilitate client flow from some of the largest asset managers, hedge funds, insurance companies, and pension funds in the world. At the end of my rotation I have to present a pitch to my desk on a specific tranche within an ABS (asset-backed security) or CLO (collateralized loan obligation).”

At Drew, Agudelo participated in Drew’s Semester on Wall Street program and The Fund, a student-run market portfolio. “These immersive experiences have helped me establish a foundation of understanding to build upon,” he said. “In addition to the professors who help contextualize classroom topics into the real world of the markets. I am grateful to all of the professors, the faculty of the Center for Career Development, and the rest of the Drew community who have supported me throughout this journey.”

Agudelo hopes to receive a full-time offer from RBC by the close of his internship. “I want to be in a position where I can best add value to the team I hopefully join, while being fulfilled with the work I do,” he said. “RBC is a great company and a place where I would be honored to start my career.”

“I hope I can open the path for more students like myself who are underrepresented in the industry, as well as students from Drew.”
