Drew Theological School DMin Students Sign Matriculation Book

A tradition for all incoming students since 1867

July 2024 – Drew Theological School celebrated Doctor of Ministry students commencing the Courageous Leadership in a Changing Culture cohort at a recent matriculation service. The community gathered to witness the signing the historic matriculation book, a rite of passage for all incoming students.

The service took place in Craig Chapel and was live-streamed for those unable to attend in person.

The students were welcomed by Theological School Dean Edwin David Aponte, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Robert Seesengood, and Associate Dean of Vocation and Formation Tanya Linn Bennett.

“Today is your opportunity to join other students since 1867 and sign this book—an indication of your formal entry to Drew,” said Aponte. “Community is very important to us. Today is a day of welcome and celebration.”

Sessengood shared a history of the matriculation book, which originally served as an official documentation of enlisted students.

“You can flip through the pages and watch the names change and the scripts change,” said Seesengood. “It’s your turn, it’s your book. This book belongs to the students.”

Students were invited to sign the 150-year-old matriculation book by Director of Doctoral Studies Meredith Hoxie Schol.

Bennett closed the ceremony with a prayer of exaltation.
