Experiential opportunities offered though Drew’s Special Collections

September 2024 – This summer, Drew University invited two local high school students to intern in the Special Collections within the University libraries.
The pilot program introduced the student interns to rare books and manuscripts found in the extensive collections within the Archives. The students were given the unique opportunity to assist the Special Collections staff with research, special projects, and explore the vast collections held by Drew.
“Before visiting the Archives, these students had only been able to view such materials through glass,” said Manager of Special Collections Candace Reilly. “Now, after a lesson on handling the materials, students conducted research and explored the items firsthand.”
“I am hoping to introduce the Archives to more local high schools and students this year,” said Reilly. “This opportunity allows students to get a taste of what Drew University and our Special Collections offer our students on campus.”
Zachary Malangone, a junior at West Morris Mendham High School in Mendham, New Jersey, worked with Reilly to transcribe Drew’s antiphonary manuscript, a collection of liturgical songs used in a choir. The antiphonary is estimated to have been produced from 1550 – 1650. Through intensive research, Reilly and Malangone delved into the history of the manuscript and the history of music. They provided a list of all the antiphons within the manuscript, and Malangone brought the music to life once again by transcribing all the songs.
“We worked together to better understand the manuscript and to tell the story of its music,” said Reilly. “It has been a wonderful experience collaborating with a talented music student to breathe new life into this manuscript through our project. Music, once again, surrounds this book.”
The antiphonary project is currently on exhibit in the lobby of the Library through the duration of the fall semester. Click here to visit the project website.
