Travel
Designed to deepen the understanding of Mediterranean cultures, the program will begin in Southern France and continue to Morocco. Travelers will visit a number of locations in each country, which will likely include Cannes, Nice, and Marseille (France) and Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech (Morocco). The conceptual model for this shortTREC’s exploration is the MUCEM, an innovative museum in Marseille that proposes a regional Mediterranean identity that links cultures in Southern Europe and North Africa.
Rethink
Regional Identity
What are the implications and limitations of using regional identity to create a “Mediterranean World” model, including such concepts as the Mediterranean diet and garden? How does history, including Romanization in the ancient world, Arab Muslim conquest in the Middle Ages, and modern French colonization of North Africa, affect the culture?
